A Midwinter Walk

Jane Rosoux writes...

"Unfortunately, I noticed too late that the batteries have gone in my camera and I was unable to take any photographs of Robin Midwinter's circular walk from Golders Green on Wednesday. There were 10 participants and Robin led us on a circuitous walk across Hampstead Heath Extension to Hampstead Garden Suburb and Big Wood then via a different part of the Extension to Spaniards Road to enter Kenwood by Ikin Gate.

"From there he went to the source of the River Fleet (or rather Highgate brook) and followed the brook to Parliament Hill Fields. From there he went via Parliament Hill to Whitestone Pond then down to the Bull and Bush / Golders Hill Park cafe for the lunch stop after 6 miles.

"After lunch there was just a mile to go. We went through the Hill Garden to the Pergola (which was closed for repairs) then through Golders Hill Park back to Golders Green Station.

"The weather was cold and there were a few flakes of snow so for your blog I attach some photographs of Hampstead Heath and Kenwood which I took on the 6th January 2010..."

Suburban Stories: Golders Green Walk

What makes your suburb unique? London Transport Museum is working with communities in Golders Green to create a community walk in and around the suburb to capture what it means to them today. If you live or work in Golders Green this is your chance to tell everyone about your local area in your own words and to create a fabulous walk for your community. To find out more come along to an introductory meeting in Golders Green library on Tuesday 17th March at 6:30pm. It’s all part of a new exhibition looking at how transport has shaped suburbia to be launched in autumn at the Museum in Covent Garden.

Home James!

Last Saturday saw a rare "home" walk for the Hampstead Ramblers; we are more likely to be found in the Chilterns than on our eponymous Heath.

Ably led by Walks Organiser Jane Rosoux, a dozen of us enjoyed a moderate-pace walk from Golders Green via Hill Garden and Kenwood to Parliament Hill. This walk was slightly shorter than usual to allow for our 25th Annual General Meeting.

Our thanks go out to Margaret Harvey (our Chairman) and Maija Roberts (our Treasurer) for their sterling work in providing a splendid lunch, culminating with warm mincemeat turnovers and hot drinks.

A.G.M. business was conducted in a good spirit. We are already planning events for the 2009/10 Christmas holiday! One thing to watch out for next year will be our 25th Anniversary celebrations.

Stay tuned for more details.......
